birthday trip to Cambridge
Cambridge
The third weekend in September, we took a quick road trip for my birthday. This year, my birthday fell on a Sunday and as Sundays tend to be quite busy and demanding, the only thing I really wanted was to just get away for a day and relax. Mark needed to pick up a recent purchase just north of Cambridge, so Cambridge it was!
We left Hay on Saturday afternoon, once the girls had finished their various dance and theatre classes. We decided to stop at Berrington Hall for a cream tea and hopefully a quick glance at the house. As National Trust members, we highly value the ability to pop in and out of these gorgeous spots without any extra faff (a favorite British word). The house was unfortunately closed by the time we got there, so we gladly had some tea and cakes and used the facilities before the drive ahead.
The charming entrance sign at the gate of Berrington Hall.
The house and grounds looked quite lovely, and it even had a secondhand bookshop. We will definitely have to go back for a real visit.

We left Berrington Hall as they closed and made our way to a town north of Cambridge. The drive was fun as we all listened to the 4th Harry Potter together. Mark picked up his eBay find and then we stopped for dinner – my only other request of the birthday weekend – tacos!

Not just any tacos either. Fish tacos! I absolutely love and miss tacos probably the most of any food in America. We haven’t found any tacos in surrounding areas to Hay. Only bigger cities get this deliciousness. (I make tacos every Tuesday night to suffice.) And fish tacos are my reigning favorite. Mark did his excellent research and tracked some good ones down for me. We all loved the stop.

We drove a little bit more to our AirBnB and had a lovely rest. In the morning, Mark and the girls surprised me with a waffle breakfast he brought from home and gifts from family. Some highlights: Genevieve made some gorgeous clay earrings for me and Mark spoiled me with a favorite print from Christoph Neimann. I adore it and cannot wait to hang it in our dining room.

We packed up and left the AirBnB and drove into Cambridge for the day.

We stopped in many charity shops and an Oxfam bookshop too! I was delighted to spot this book token inside a book. How charming!
Found this old book token holding someone’s spot in a secondhand book.

We spent a lot of time in various bookshops. Especially Heffers.

Lovely sunset as we drove back to Hay quite late. It was a whirlwind of an overnight trip, but so fun. 💚
